While Northern Virginia is home to high tech companies, government facilities and glittering tourist attractions, poverty exists in all forms and is estimated at more than 65,000 people in Fairfax County alone. Those living at or below the poverty level in other Northern Virginia counties range from a low of 4% to as high as 13%.
The Diocese of Arlington comprises 70 parishes in the 21 northern-most counties within the Commonwealth of Virginia. To help organize efforts to assist those in need, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the Arlington Diocese is composed of a District Council and Parish Conferences at 11 Catholic churches.
We have about 400 volunteers and are called Vincentians. We have no paid staff. Donations go directly to those in need. We are Catholics, Protestants, and people of all faiths. We are retireees, stay-at-home moms, and public- and private-sector employees. Our common goal: help those in need regardless of race, origin, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation.
Are you in need of food, shelter, clothing, medical care, help with rent or a utility bill? Something else?
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) asks you to Help Us Help Others -- thousands of Virginians who are our neighbors and live in situational or generational poverty. Help change lives!
Sam Cho, a Wegmans Community Giving Manager at the Tysons store, donates $500 in gift cards to Paul Korkemaz, SVDP Arlington Council President.
The rapid spread of COVID-19 is greatly affecting the work of the SVdP in northern Virginia.
Requests for assistance to our conferences and pantries are at an all-time high. The downturn in the economy has reduced donations. The increase in demand and the decrease in donations have had the expected effect. While, for the moment, we are still able to help, our ability to assist those in need is being reduced.
If your circumstances allow you to make a donation to our work, please do so using the “Donate” button on this page.
Please help us help others.
We pray with you for the first responders and the medical professionals who risk their own safety to help all of us and we pray with you for an end to this pandemic.
In June, 2021, the Tysons and Fairfax Wegmans supermarkets combined to donate $500 in gift cards to the SVDP Arlington Council. According to Paul Korkemaz, Council President, “We thank Wegmans for their generosity and concern for our Friend’s food insecurity in northern Virginia. They are another wonderful example of Corporate giving in our area.”
